If you aren’t at home, make sure to put it in a place where it can get at least five hours of sunlight. Either natural or artificial light will work fine!
When the seasons change, you may need to adjust how much time (or if any) your tree spends outside and then inside so that it’s getting enough sun daily.
Bonsai trees take quite some time to grow, but once they grow, they can become very big. You can see this, especially with indoor bonsai trees. Most often, it takes a couple of months before you see any growth.
But the journey from growing seed to a fully grown bonsai tree is eventually worth it. The majority of people that start growing a bonsai tree do it because they love the concept of taking care of something that is living.
Bonsai trees need a lot less water than other plants, so don’t be afraid to make sure they are watered properly because it can lead to mold or even rot on your tree, and then you will have to start from scratch again!
Where Should You Place Your Bonsai Tree at Home?
The best place to put your bonsai tree is a place where’s a lot of sunlight. Sunlight is crucial for the bonsai tree. Generally, it’s best to place the tree close to a window where it will get the most sunlight.
Other places that you could place your bonsai tree are the kitchen or the living room. Make sure that there’s light coming through directly to your bonsai tree. This is essential if the tree doesn’t get enough light.
Your bonsai tree could eventually die. So make sure to check on it every week and see if the tree gets enough light. You can always buy artificial light if you feel like it’s not growing fast enough.
It does take a couple of weeks before you see any growth. The bonsai tree grows quite slowly, so make sure to take the time and don’t rush it.
Experts advise that the bonsai needs to get at least 4 to 5 hours of direct light for the best growth.
One common option for Bonsai enthusiasts is to have a solarium, which generally has southern-facing windows. This is a great place to put your bonsai tree because you will get the most light in this area.
Can a Bonsai Live in Low Light?
Yes, bonsai trees can live in low light. Experts have shown that growing these trees under low light won’t affect the growth. As long as you keep prune and water the bonsai often, the bonsai is going to be perfectly fine under low light.
Normally, people don’t grow bonsai trees in low light because it’s less attractive. Showing off your bonsai to other people is best when it’s sunny outside. Plants like Ficus elastica are a great choice to grow under low light.
These bonsai trees are easy to take care of and don’t require much time. Growing a Ficus elastica can take years before seeing any growth. However, normally people see some significant growth after a couple of months.
After all, bonsai trees are a beautiful addition to any home. Some require more time than others by pruning, trimming, and watering the tree. But if you have the time and patience to continue caring for your bonsai, you will see it grow.
Can a Bonsai Tree Live Indoors?
Yes, bonsai trees can live indoors. Generally, watering is key to grow a bonsai tree indoors. Many people overlook this because they want an easy way to take care of the bonsai.
Some bonsai trees are grown indoors don’t require much time, but the majority do. So, the best way to make sure your bonsai tree is getting enough water indoors is by using a soil moisture gauge.
By doing this, you can measure how much water the bonsai needs, and you won’t overwater. I’ve grown over 13+ different bonsai trees over the past year, both indoors and outdoors.
The main problem with growing a bonsai tree indoors is that people forget to water the tree or overwater. The easiest way to avoid these problems is by using a soil moisture gauge.
This is a great way to measure the amount of water your bonsai tree needs and avoid overwatering. Other ways to see if your bonsai needs extra water is just by feeling it with your hand.
If the soil is very dry, it needs water, and if it’s too dark, you’ve probably overwatered. This isn’t a problem if you make this mistake once or twice but keep in mind that doing this too often will hurt your bonsai.
How Often Should You Water a Bonsai Tree?
Experts advise watering a bonsai tree at least once a week. This will keep the bonsai tree healthy and avoid accidentally overwatering the bonsai tree.
Avoid watering your bonsai every day. Watering your bonsai daily will hurt the tree rather than grow it. I’ve seen numerous times where people would water their bonsai tree 3 to 4 times a week.
Eventually, the bonsai tree slowly died because of how much water it got. So, make sure to avoid watering your bonsai tree daily. Once or twice a week should be enough. The key is to give the bonsai tree enough water and avoid overwatering it.
At first, this might be quite hard, but once you’ve done it a couple of times, it will get easier, and you’ll get the hang of it. If you don’t know how much water your bonsai should get, try giving it.
Give your bonsai tree around 5 full glasses of water and let it soak in. Wait a couple of hours and give it 2 more glasses of water. This should be enough, check up on it the next day and see if the soil is dry.
The most common problem I’ve seen is that people water their bonsai tree too much. The water will start to seep out of the soil and around the edges, making it so that there’s too much water.
Bonsai trees need, on average, about 5 to 7 hours of sunlight every day. If bonsai trees don’t get enough sunlight, they’ll start to show symptoms of poor health. Check out our blog for more information here.
